Hoping for cheers, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos instead got jeers and boos at her commencement speech at Bethune-Cookman University. As soon as she began to speak, the crowd erupted in boos that lasted for more than five minutes, and many of the students turned their back on DeVos in protest.
An unpopular and baffling choice as a commencement speaker, the university drew approximately 60,000 thousand signatures in protest of DeVos the week prior to commencement. Calls were also made for the university president, Edison Jackson to resign, including a call from the Florida chapter of the NAACP.
