After believing President Obama won the 2012 election by winning the electoral college, but not the popular vote, Donald Trump went on a Twitter rampage decrying the electoral system. In fact, President Obama won both the popular vote (by about 5 million votes) and the electoral college 332 vs. 206.
At the time, Trump thought winning by the electoral system was so unjust, he Tweeted the following messages. He victory in 2016 was by the very same electoral system, as he lost the popular vote by about 3 million votes. The margin set a record for any President election, no other President had lost the popular vote by such a wide margin ans still won the election.
Tweets deleted by Trump after he won the electoral college:
- He (Obama) lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country! (Nov 6, 2012)
- The phoney (misspelled) electoral college made a laughing stock out of our nation. The loser won! (Nov 6, 2012)
- More votes equals a loss...revolution! (Nov 7, 2012)
And those tweets ranting against the electoral college that he did not delete:
We can't let this happen. We should march on Washington and stop this travesty. Our nation is totally divided!

Lets fight like hell and stop this great and disgusting injustice! The world is laughing at us.

This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 7, 2012
The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy.

And of course, Trump sang a different tune after he won the election by only winning the electoral college! As noted by his last tweet, he somehow thinks he also won the popular vote, even though he lost by 3 million votes and there is no documented examples of any fraud or that anybody voted illegally.
The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. Campaigning is much different!

"@mike_pence: Congratulations to @RealDonaldTrump; officially elected President of the United States today by the Electoral College!"

In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally
