President Trump on Wednesday dissolved the fraud commission that he set up to investigate his unverified claims of widespread voter fraud during the 2016 presidential election (see Trump fulfills promise to investigate voter fraud). Vice President Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a vocal supporter of voter ID laws, led the commission. It was made up of Republicans and Democrats.
The White House said Trump decided to disband the commission because several states failed to hand over voter information. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that “rather than engage in endless legal battles at taxpayer expense,” Trump signed an executive order abolishing the panel and turning the matter over to the Department of Homeland Security. She failed to provide any evidence of any fraud that the commission may have found.
Trump did not comment on any findings the commission may have found, leading most analyst to conclude no fraud was found. Drawing from Trump’s past, the President is not shy in telling others when he has been proven correct. The commission was established months after Trump claimed, without citing evidence, that millions of people voted illegally in 2016, depriving him of a popular-vote victory over Hillary Clinton. Proving his wild claims about wide-spread voter fraud and the reasons he did not win the popular vote would have been something he would have probably mentioned once or fifty times had any fraud been found.
