A day after being belittled by new Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has resigned. Priebus’s tenure as Chief of Staff is the shortest in US history. It was announced that General John Kelly will take over the position beginning Monday morning. General Kelly currently serves as Secretary of Homeland Security. It is unknown who is on the short list to fill his position.
Before he worked for the Trump Administration, Priebus was in charge of the Republican National Committee. The Chief of Staff normally is in charge of the President’s daily agenda, and serves as the gatekeeper to the President himself. A strong Chief of Staff should control access to the President and keep him/her on track to achieve their agenda. The blame for any White House chaos would normally fall on the shoulders of the Chief of Staff, but Trump has a tendency to do and say what he wants, anytime he wants. Many believe General Kelly will have a difficult time restoring order with a President who exhibits little self control.
Not counting multiple campaign managers and advisers, the Trump Administration has seen an unusually high degree of turnover, especially for the first six months. The following people have either been fired, or have resigned:
Attorney General Sally Yates 1/30/2017
National Security Adviser Michael Flynn 2/13/2017
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara 3/11/2017
Deputy Chief of Staff Katie Walsh 3/30/2017
FBI Director James Comey 5/9/2017
White House Communications Director Michael Dubke 5/30/2017
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer 7/26/2017
Chief of Staff Reince Priebus 7/28/2017
***UPDATE***
White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci 7/31/2017 (10 days), fired before he technically took over the position, which he was scheduled to do on August 15th.
