Trump’s pick to replace Flynn turns down offer

2/18/2017

President Trump’s first choice to replace Michael Flynn has turned down the job.  Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn resigned in disgrace after it was learned that he lied to Vice president Pence regarding his contact with Russian operatives during the election.  Trump had hoped to hire Robert Harward, a former Navy SEAL and deputy commander of U.S. Central Command under President Obama.

It was reported by The Washington Post, CBS News and The Financial Times that Harward turned down the offer in part because of his concerns that he would not have full say over the composition of his staff.  It was reported that Trump insisted that Deputy National Security Adviser K.T. McFarland be allowed to stay on, and Harward refused to retain the former Fox News analyst and Flynn hire.  Harward, currently a senior executive at Lockheed Martin, also cited the apparent lack of organization within the Trump White House, FT and CNN reported.
