Calling Comey a Showboat and Grandstander, President Trump said he was going to fire FBI Director James Comey regardless of the Deputy Attorney General’s recommendation during an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt. These statements were in direct conflict with his termination letter ( Comey Termination letter) and the reasons given by White House staff and Vice President Pence. The admission that the termination letter was not accurate gave greater support to those who believe Comey’s firing was due to the FBI’s investigation into the Trump’s campaign suspected collusion with the Russians to influence the election.
During the interview, Trump also discussed Comey telling him that the President was not under investigation on three separate occasions. Trump further admitted to asking Comey that if it were possible, could he tell him if he was under investigation. Some pundits wondered if this could be considered obstruction of justice or even potential witness tampering. While inappropriate, most believe it didn’t cross the line.
