Over the past few days, multiple reports have been emerging that there is no evidence that President Obama, or any US intelligence agency, wiretapped Trump Tower, Donald Trump, or his campaign in any way.
- 3/5 Director of National Intelligence James Clapper – “For the part of the national security apparatus that I oversaw as DNI, there was no such wiretap activity mounted against the president-elect at the time, as a candidate, or against his campaign,”
- 3/15 House Intelligence Committee – Chairman Devin Nunes with Ranking Democrat Adam Schiff “To date, I’ve seen no evidence that supports the claim that President Trump made that his predecessor had wiretapped he and his associates at Trump Tower,”
- 3/16 Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr – “We have not seen any evidence that there was a wiretap or a (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) court order against Trump Tower or somebody in Trump Tower.”
- 3/17 Fox News Shep Smith (reportedly the source of Trump’s information) – “Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind, that the now president of the United States was surveilled at any time, in any way, full stop.”
- 3/20 House Intelligence Committee Chairman (Again) – “Was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower? No, but there never was, and the information we got on Friday continues to lead us in that direction,”
- 3/20 FBI Director James Comey – “With respect to the president’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets,” “We have looked carefully inside the FBI.”
Will Trump supply evidence? To date he steadfastly refuses to admit that he was wrong. He continues to insist that he was right and that he has been vindicated (mysteriously) in some small way. The sad truth is that Trump is not gracious enough, or big enough to admit that he made a mistake. To do that would require courage, self reflection, and humility; traits that up to this point, Trump has failed to exhibit.
